Film Stock Film Night - The Gleaners and I - 19/9

Film Stock is back! Join us for the first screening of the Autumn*24 programme, held in our cellar on Thursday 19 September.

A special anniversary treat, we're returning with the filmmaker we began with, Agnès Varda. The Gleaners and I (2000) couldn't be further from her fiction work: a collage of ideas, images, and interviews, reaching with a broad scope the implications of the age-old practice of gleaning. From this simple premise, Varda explores all the ways we deal with waste, whether it's combing through fields for quirky vegetables, making use of leftover food from a fancy restaurant, or incorporating recycled materials into artwork (like our poster!).  

Transforming this mundane collection of scraps from observations about the world into a powerful political statement on the treatment of society's castoffs, Gleaners also becomes a stunning self-portrait of an ageing artist keeping pace with a developing world desperate to leave people behind. It's truly impossible not to be charmed by the essence of Varda, her wit and curiosity, plus her love of heart-shaped potatoes.
