The Portuguese arts and culture magazine returns. English language edition.
"Umbigo Magazine issue 78 is as peculative fiction for a future of empathy and exploration, rooted in investigating the evolving present. This edition has two different covers made by the artist Kiluanji Kia Henda, one of them as the result of the art project Afri Lunar Sation. The project is about a failed lunar odyssey to build a colony on the Moon. In that sense it resembles Icaru13 – The first journey to the sun, a work about the celebration, and also the failure of the post-independence political project in Angola; ultimately, getting to the sun is a conquest destined to end in tragedy.
Further, the exhibition curated by Ana Anacleto, “Perceptiveness (to see is to care)” with a focus on the medium of photography reflects the concept of “slow curating” which is an integrated approach to art objects and our relationship to them. Umbigo’s issue 78 is an odyssey, somatically, visually, and critically, with 3 art projects made specifically for the magazine and a visual essay by Lala Meredith-Vula. Previously unseen desires are brought to the surface and are presented on these pages."
