We’re putting on another film screening in March, and this time we’re throwing it back almost a century to bring you one of the very first depictions of lesbian desire on screen - Leontine Sagan’s endlessly astonishing Mädchen in Uniform from 1931 Germany.
Taking place within an all-girl’s boarding school, Mädchen in Uniform follows new arrival Manuela, who struggles to settle into her repressive new environment until she develops an intense crush on one of her teachers. Made at the height of the culturally groundbreaking Weimar period, Sagan’s work has fascinated generations of cinemagoers, namely for the unmistakable queerness of its lead, its all-female ensemble cast and its sensitive, empathetic understanding of female adolescence, solidarity and sexuality. Though it was supposedly not these factors that led Hitler’s chief propagandist Joseph Goebbels to subsequently order all prints of the film within Germany destroyed, but rather its criticisms of strict authority. Surviving this period of censorship through its popularity in other countries, we celebrate it 95 years on Thursday 26th March.
Doors from 6pm, film starts at 7pm. Tickets are £6 and as always, include a free drink.
This project is supported by Film Hub North with National Lottery funding on behalf of the BFI Film Audience Network.
