Real poo. Shampoo. Nostalgie de la boue.

This issue of PAPERBOY is delivered to you partially soiled, with grit beneath its fingernails, sweat in its pits, stains on its reputation and filth on its mind. Oh, and bird shit on the bonnet of its brand-new whip. (Bloody bastard pigeons.)

The French phrase at the top of this page means a yearning for degradation, an attraction to the seamier side of life: sex, drugs, that whole demi-monde scene. But it can also be taken literally: “nostalgia for mud”. A love of grime, muck, crud, gunk.

No one’s born a clean freak. That’s a condition programmed into us by anxious adults. Turn your back for a moment and little kids will cover themselves in crap. This is a celebration of the impulse to get down and dirty.

As ever, PAPERBOY’s contributors have played fast and loose with the theme. Alex Bilmes looks it straight in the faeces. Rob Nowill sees the funny side. Lou Stoppard confronts the blemish on her name by false association. Olivia Wilson is genuinely nostalgie de la boue. Johnny Davis is nostalgie de les Sonic Youth. Olivia Ovenden considers the greasy chin. Kara Wilson takes on the stigma of menstruation. Daisy Gibson is trodden underfoot.

Also: stylish clothes for filthy weather; dressing up to put out the bins; a few of Kim Jones’ favourite things; and Jeremy Lee mixes the dirtiest martini.

Plus, a last word from PAM. Who’s been taking it in dirty and sending it back clean her whole life.

Enjoy the issue. You’ll need a good scrub afterwards.
