*SOLD OUT* Cruising (1980) - 30/10 - Film Night

Regular price £6.00 Sale

Cinema in the basement is back! On Thursday 30th October we are ushering in the return of our monthly film programme (and Halloween!) with a screening of William Friedkin’s 1980 grimy nocturnal thriller Cruising, 45 years after its release.

Initially a controversial flop, Cruising has become more favourable in its afterlife, but remains largely under-celebrated within the work of Friedkin, its star Al Pacino, and the New-York-by-night films of the era. Pacino puts in a magnetic, homoquestioning leading turn as Steve Burns, the rookie undercover cop assigned the case of a serial killer haunting the Meatpacking District's leather bars. To perform his detective work, Burns must first perform convincingly as a leather daddy, learning the rules and codes of the scene to assimilate. On the surface, Cruising succeeds as a tense slasher and unique time capsule of NYC underground gay nightlife just before the HIV/AIDS crisis, whilst also offering a strange and ambiguous study of an identity in doubt.

And on the hi-fi beforehand we’ll be playing a mix of dark disco/electronic tracks inspired by the film. Leather garb encouraged and get those handkerchiefs in the correct pockets.

Doors from 6pm, film starts at 7pm. Tickets are £6 and as always, include a free drink on arrival.

This project is supported by Film Hub North with National Lottery funding on behalf of the BFI Film Audience Network.
